Lecturer Originally from Fairfax, VA, William Norfolk received his B.S. in Biology from the University of Mary Washington in 2012 and his M.S. in Environmental Science and Policy from George Mason University in 2015. As a master’s student, William developed and interest in environmental pathogens and disease transmission. His master’s research focused on the role of reef fishes as transmission vectors for Caribbean coral diseases. Following his master’s degree, William spent several years in the Florida Keys working in marine conservation and education before moving to Athens in 2019 to pursue a doctorate. At the University of Georgia (UGA), William earned a Ph.D. in Environmental Health in 2023. His dissertation research focused on the characterization and environmental risk factors associated with the emerging marine pathogen Vibrio alginolyticus. Following completion of his Ph.D., William took a post-doctoral appointment at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) working in the Healthcare Environment Applied Research Team (HEART). His postdoctoral research focused on developing improved methods for the detection of non-tuberculosis Mycobacteria and other difficult to culture pathogens from healthcare settings. In 2024, William joined the UGA Division of Biological Sciences as a Lecturer where he teaches the project-based lab course Basic Skills in the Laboratory (BIOL 3110L).
