Advising

Every student at UGA must be advised and cleared for registration each semester. Your advisor will help you navigate your degree requirements and track your progress toward graduation. You cannot register for classes until you have had your registration hold lifted by your advisor.

FOR INCOMING ORIENTATION STUDENTS

All incoming First-Year and Transfer students will be advised at their in-person orientation session. Make sure to check out the New Student Orientation site for information about signing up for your orientation session and keep an eye on your inbox for new information. Advisors are not able to meet with incoming students or clear their registration holds before their in-person orientation session.

FOR CURRENT STUDENTS - MORE THAN 60 HOURS

If you have declared a major of Biology and have more than 6o hours, you will be advised by the Biological Science Division advisors in Barrow Hall.

Students majoring in Biology are required to meet with their assigned academic advisor once each academic term to be advised and cleared for class registration.  Advising appointments are made available within the first month of each semester and will continue until the last day of class. Check SAGE.

During intersession and Summer term, students are encouraged to email to schedule an appointment.

When classes are in session, Drop-in Hours are available for students with specific questions or concerns. Please note these hours are not for formal advising and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Hours are subject to change.

Undergraduate Research in Biology

Undergraduates majoring in biology have the opportunity to enhance their learning through direct participation in research and scholarship. At UGA, these opportunities enable undergraduates to participate in ground-breaking research, often as part of a team of graduate students and faculty. In fact, many students can earn academic credit while working under an experienced faculty mentor by taking BIOL 4960R or working directly with the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO). The Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research Fellowship (BSURF) has been established to support undergraduate research opportunities in the Division of Biological Sciences within the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. The Fellowship provides financial assistance to students who have not had an opportunity to participate in a mentored research experience (paid, volunteer, or for credit) since matriculating to the University of Georgia.
