Dear Students,

You are strongly encouraged to consider applying for a new award to help fund summer undergraduate research.

The Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research Fellowship (BSURF) has been established to support undergraduate research opportunities in the Division of Biological Sciences within the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. The Fellowship provides financial assistance to a student who has not had an opportunity to participate in a mentored research experience (paid, volunteer, or for credit) since matriculating to The University of Georgia. An award of $3,000.00 will be provided to the recipient of the Fellowship and paid in two installments in the Summer of 2022. The research is to be completed during the Summer Thru session term of 2022.

Eligibility
Applicants must be current Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Biology, Cellular Biology, Genetics, Marine Sciences, Microbiology, or Plant Biology majors in their 1st through 3rd year and have not had the opportunity to engage in mentored, scientific research.

Finding Research Opportunities
Students are responsible for finding a faculty mentor to supervise the summer experience. The Division Biological Sciences Research Opportunities page has a guide to help students find a research mentor. CURO, the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities, also has a guide : https://curo.uga.edu/students/getting_started_guide.html

The application deadline is March 31, 2022 at 5:00pm.  The completed application packet should be submitted through Qualtrics.  Only completed application packets will be considered.

Best of luck to all of our applicants,
Dr. Kris Miller
Division of Biological Sciences Director

Undergraduate Research in Biology

Undergraduates majoring in biology have the opportunity to enhance their learning through direct participation in research and scholarship. At UGA, these opportunities enable undergraduates to participate in ground-breaking research, often as part of a team of graduate students and faculty. In fact, many students can earn academic credit while working under an experienced faculty mentor by taking BIOL 4960R or working directly with the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO).
